St. Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890 in Corinaldo, Italy to a poor, very Catholic family. When Maria was nine-years-old, her father died of malaria, so she had great responsibilities in the household after that. When Maria was 11-years-old, Alessandro Serenelli, a 20-year-old neighbor, attempt to assault her. She cried out “No! It is a sin! God does not want it!” She resisted him. Enraged, Alessandro stabbed Maria 14 times. She survived 24 hours in the hospital and before she died she forgave Alessandro and said that she wanted him to be in heaven with her. She died on July 6, 1902. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII on June 24, 1950.
Maria is the patron of purity, chastity, victims of sexual assault, young girls, teenagers, forgiveness, martyrs, and the poor.
