Brief Story:
Saint Josephine Bakhita lived from 1869 to 1947. She was born in Darfur, Sudan and was kidnapped by slave traders when she was around seven-years-old. She endured brutal treatment under multiple owners. She later went to Italy, when she was sold to an Italian diplomat who took her there. She was then placed int he care of the Canossian Sisters in Venice. During her time with the nuns, they taught her Catholicism and she decided to convert. With the nun’s help the the Italian legal authorities, she was freed. She was baptized in 1890 and later became a Canossian Sister, herself. For the last 50 years of her life, she lived as a nun, working as a cook, seamstress, and doorkeeper. She was known for her kindness, faith, and joyful spirit even though she had suffered much in her life. Pope John Paul II canonized her in 2000.
