Feast Day: August 14th
St. Maximilian Kolbe was born in Zdunska Wola, Poland on January 8th, 1894. He did a lot of good work, especially with the press in monasteries before World War II, but once war broke out, he was ultimately sent to Auschwitz. He was arrested for his anti-Nazi work. While he was there, he helped the other prisoners and ministered the sacrament to the best of his ability. One day, another prisoner tried to escape, so the guards took several of the prisoners and called them to go to the gas chamber. They called a husband and a father and he begged them to let him live, so that he could make it back to his family. Maximilian offered to take his place, ultimately meaning that he was going to die.
After taking the place of the prisoners, he was eventually killed by a lethal injection after being put in the gas chamber and starved. He died August 14th, 1941.
Pier is the patron of prisoners, journalists, and the pro-life movement.
