Anthony is the patron of lost things, the poor, travelers, sailors, expectant mothers, and mail workers

St. Anthony was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195 as Fernando Martins. He first joined the Augustinian order, but later became a Franciscan friar. A took the name Anthony after St. Anthony the Great.

Anthony is known for his preaching, deep knowledge of the Bible, and his gift for explaining complex theology in simple ways.

He was blessed to help many people with miracles both during and after his death. He was declared a Doctor of the Church in 1946 because of how he taught.

Legend has it that he once prayed to recover a lost psalter and it miraculously returned. Hence why we pray for his intercession when items are lost!

He died at 36 years old in Padua, Italy in 1231. He left such an impact, however, that he was canonized just a year later!
