Feast Day: April 23rd
George is the patron of soldiers, scouts, farmers, England, Georgia, and those suffering from leprosy or a plague.
St. George, often known as “the Dragon Slayer” was a Roman soldier and Christian martyr. He lived during the 3rd century. He is most well-known for the legend of slaying a dragon that was terrorizing a town and demanding human sacrifice. The story goes that just as a princess was about to be sacrificed, George arrived, slew the dragon, and saved her. This led to the town converting to Christianity.
In actuality, George was martyred under the rule of Emperor Diocletian for refusing to renounce his faith. He died around 303 AD.
In his story, the dragon represents evil, persecution, or sometimes paganism. George’s armor symbolizes courage, faith, and martyrdom. The spear is a sign of spiritual warfare and protection of the innocent.
